Why I Dislike Cruising and Ate My First Bananas in 3 Years

Introduction

I’ve been on a few cruises before and I’ve never really enjoyed them. For example, I ate bananas for the first time in 3 years while I was on this trip and that’s because I didn’t have any access to fresh fruit or vegetables on the ship. We spent most of our time chilling by the pool or reading books in our rooms instead of exploring port towns with other passengers who were onshore excursions or eating at buffets like we did at breakfast and lunch every day

I’ve been on cruises before but have never really enjoyed them.

If you have ever cruised, you might agree that it is a great way to see many places in a short time. The ship is like a floating city with multiple restaurants, bars and entertainment options. You can book shore excursions easily on the boat without much effort.

In addition to all of this, the food is usually good! Although there’s always at least one dish I don’t enjoy as much as others (usually pasta), overall it’s pretty tasty. And let’s not forget about the nightly shows—they’re fabulous! It makes me feel like I’m living in Las Vegas for a few days every time I go on board.

The only thing I dislike about cruising? That feeling of being trapped when my vacation ends:

There’s just something about the whole experience that doesn’t really feel like a real holiday to me.

There’s just something about the whole experience that doesn’t really feel like a real holiday to me.

It’s true that I enjoy going on cruises, but not for the reasons that most people do. I’m not one of those people who would rather spend my time exploring port than on the ship itself; I actually love exploring places and discovering new things. However, there are certain things about cruising that simply don’t appeal to me:

  • Everyone is always in a rush; they’re constantly trying to get somewhere or meet someone else by a certain time, so you never have enough time at any one place to truly relax and enjoy it before being rushed off again. The worst thing about this is how miserable it makes everyone else seem—the constant stress wreaks havoc on everyone’s moods and makes everyone irritable when all they really want is some peace! It also makes them forget how beautiful their surroundings are—if we could all slow down long enough, maybe then we’d realize how lucky we are…
  • Everyone is trying too hard to have fun together as one big group instead of experiencing each other as individuals with different interests and personalities (or even backgrounds). This can lead to clashes between groups if their interests aren’t similar enough (and sometimes even when they are), which results in negative feelings towards each other–and these bad vibes only make everything worse by making us feel less inclined towards wanting

I’ve done shore excursions before and they were okay, but they still feel like work.

A shore excursion is a tour you can take while in port. It’s usually included in the price of your cruise, so it’s a great way to see some things that might otherwise be hard to find or expensive.

Shore excursions have pros and cons. They’re great if you’re looking for an activity-heavy day, but they also cost time and money, so they aren’t ideal if all you want to do is walk around and explore on your own. If this sounds like what you want to do during your next trip abroad, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Pros: You’ll save money by booking a shore excursion instead of paying for transportation and admission fees separately. You’ll also have someone else lead the way so that you don’t get lost or confused about where everything is located. Finally, many times there will be more than one option available at each location visited (e.g., walking tours vs guided tours). This gives travelers who aren’t experienced with their destination choice over how much time/money/effort they’d like spend seeing different sites within reachable distance from each other without having any prior knowledge about what might be worth visiting first!

I decided that I wanted to stay on the ship while everyone else was out exploring, so I could fully relax.

  • You can relax on the ship.
  • You can’t relax on shore excursions.
  • If you want to relax, the ship is a good place for that.
  • If you want to go someplace else, then maybe not so much.

I spent most of my time chilling out by the pool and reading a book.

I spent most of my time chilling out by the pool and reading a book. This was great because it allowed me to relax in the sun, and also because I could read by the pool. Most cruises are for people who like to be on vacation, but not too much.

Reading books is one of my favorite things to do when I’m on vacation; however, cruising can be quite strict about bringing books onboard, so I had to make sure not to bring any paperbacks with me into port (i.e., any place where you visit for more than four hours).

For lunch I ate at the buffet.

There are a few reasons why I prefer the buffet to eating at restaurants. For one, it’s convenient: I don’t have to get dressed up or put on makeup and there is no hostess to make me feel like an outsider when they see that my skin isn’t as smooth as their own. Buffets also offer many options, so if you are feeling healthy one day but want something more indulgent the next, you can easily satisfy any craving.

Another thing about buffets is that you can eat whatever you want (healthy or unhealthy), as much as you want, whenever it suits your fancy! If your favorite food happens to be fried chicken and poutine, then by all means indulge in both those things until there is no room left for anything else! And if all that wasn’t enough reason for me to love buffets yet…there was obviously one last benefit: the fact that they are open 24 hours a day!

The food was okay, but there wasn’t much variety and it wasn’t very healthy.

One thing that bothered me was the food. It was okay, but not very healthy and there wasn’t much variety. The buffet had a limited selection and didn’t offer any vegan or vegetarian options which I found disappointing, especially since it’s so easy to cater to people with dietary restrictions while travelling. And most of the food tasted pretty bland—there were some things that were okay, but nothing particularly special or memorable.

One night at dinner we ordered pizza from room service and it came out burnt! They hadn’t even put on cheese or sauce yet, so it was just doughy black triangles that weren’t edible. We had to call them back three times before they finally fixed our order (and then charged us for both pizzas).

That afternoon I took a nap in my room, then showered and got ready for dinner.

I was back in my room by 2pm after lunch and had a quick nap before showering and getting ready for dinner. I always get dressed up for dinner, even if I’m just going to eat pizza on the ship’s deck or something. When in Rome (or at least on a cruise liner), do as the Romans do!

After all this, it was already dark outside: we were cruising along on our way towards Costa Rica, but it was pitch black out there in the ocean so there wasn’t much to see except when we passed by another ship or two—which happened quite often!

For dinner we had a reservation at La Veranda restaurant which is the buffet restaurant that turns into an Italian restaurant at night.

Dining is one of the most important parts of a cruise for me. While I don’t mind eating at the buffet (especially on Carnival ships), I love going to sit down restaurants because it means I get good food and service. It was some of the best food I’ve ever had on a cruise ship.

The selection at dinner was great, with many options including gluten-free and vegetarian meals. There were five entrees to choose from each night, and then a few soups, salads, sides and desserts. The food was served quickly and hot (and in my case it stayed hot—I ordered room temperature dishes). And finally there was an excellent presentation to go with each dish that added to its overall appeal.

The service was also excellent: our waiter recommended things just as we’d hoped for when asked for suggestions about what to order at dinner; he explained everything thoroughly so we could make informed decisions; he checked back often enough but not too often; he remembered us even though we were only on board for two days…you get the picture!

After dinner we went to see the Magic Mike Live show in the theater, which was also fantastic!

It had everything you could imagine and more! I had lobster and it was delicious. The show itself was entertaining, fun and affordable at only $39 per ticket!

You can have a nice relaxing day on your own when everyone else is gone from the ship and do what you want without having to follow anyone else’s schedule or pay for expensive shore excursions.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed my day on the cruise ship and I’m glad that I tried it for myself. I think that if you’re going to spend a lot of money on a vacation and all you want is some peace and quiet then this is definitely the way to go!
