Introduction
I had a dream of sailing across the globe, but I didn’t have a boat. Then, one day, I saw someone on Facebook who was doing exactly what I wanted to do: travel on their own and see new places using only wind power! It was then that I realized that if this guy could do it, so could I; but only if I got a Laser sailboat instead of just any old dinghy or yacht.
So, you’ve probably heard that I sailed around the Pacific using only the wind and sun. What you probably don’t know is that I sailed it with a Laser sailboat.
What is a Laser Sailboat?
A Laser sailboat is designed to be the lightest possible method of sailing around the world by yourself. It’s made out of carbon fiber, which means it can take more abuse than other boats and still be safe to use. In fact, in 2009, I sailed from Hawaii to New Zealand with only my own body weight as ballast!
That’s right: no sandbags or water tanks needed! The boat has been designed so well that there are no superfluous parts that add unnecessary weight. This makes it ideal for going on long trips where having extra supplies may not be possible (or easy) to bring along with you.
Additionally, the boat itself is extremely versatile. It can easily be converted into a racing sailboat or an ocean-going one depending on your preferences and needs; plus it comes pre-assembled so all you have left after purchasing one from [link].
I think that’s why no-one knows about how I did this. My journey was epic! And I want to share it with you.

I’m going to start with the beginning and tell you everything, in chronological order:
First, though, I need to give you some context of my journey. There are two parts to it: before and after my decision to use a laser sailboat to make the trip across the world.

Before I tell you about my laser-sailing adventure, let me quickly explain what this type of boat is all about. A laser sailboat is basically a normal fiberglass sailing boat with an unusual addition: a large triangular spar (aka “laser”) that runs down its centerline and extends up over half the length of the hull below the waterline.
The idea for this type of adventure was inspired by how many other people were doing similar things, but not necessarily on a Laser Sailboat.
The idea for this type of adventure was inspired by how many other people were doing similar things, but not necessarily on a Laser Sailboat. I had always been fascinated by the thought of sailing around the world and doing it in as environmentally friendly way as possible, so when I saw other people taking trips like this, it piqued my interest even more. The fact that they were using their own boat made me think that maybe I could do the same thing.
I also wanted to travel more than just taking photos and posting them on Facebook once or twice a day—I wanted something that would challenge me both physically and mentally.
In fact, I hadn’t even heard of a Laser sailboat when I was first planning everything. I just wanted to travel.

I’d been inspired by other people’s adventures and decided that my own would be all about going by sailboat and using only the sun, wind, and the tip of my laser sail for power—a very fun idea! But where should I go? As it turns out, there is actually a whole world full of places where you can travel without needing any motors at all! A small group called Sailors without Borders organizes trips just like this every year. Each trip has a different theme: education or environment or poverty relief are common ones; but you can also go exploring new places if your heart desires it (like me).
So now that we have our goal set on sailing around the world using only solar energy (which sounds pretty cool), what do we need before setting off?
So, after a few years of traveling around Europe in hostels, trains and planes…I decided that I wanted more than a few photos and Facebook check-ins to show for my time away from home.
So, after a few years of traveling around Europe in hostels, trains and planes…I decided that I wanted more than a few photos and Facebook check-ins to show for my time away from home. I wanted to have something amazing to share with people when they asked about my travels, something tangible that would help them understand how I had changed as a person over the course of those three years, or how much I had grown as an individual through my experiences. And so began my quest for adventure: sailing around the world on nothing but solar power, wind and the tip of my laser sail (a type of boat).
The first step was finding financing; fortunately there are organizations like World Solar Challenge who provide grants to teams looking to compete in this global race across Australia each year. This gave me just enough money for basic equipment but not nearly enough for what else was needed.”
Instead,
In the end, I decided to go with a Laser sailboat. They’re small, don’t require a big crew, and they’re light enough that you can put it in a car or on top of your car. These qualities appealed to me because I wanted to travel across the world without hiring someone to take care of my boat or getting involved in some other complicated arrangement.
I had never heard of this type of boat before but I did some research and found out that they are actually very common in Europe and Australia (they were invented there). They also happen to be quite cheap; at least cheaper than its American cousin called Hobie Cat which is made by another company called Hobie Cat USA (which has nothing do with hobbits).
Before buying one for myself though, I decided not just do some testing but also learn how to sail first so that if anything went wrong on the open ocean then at least we would have someone who knew what he was doing aboard ship instead just someone who had bought it used from Craigslist like all good sailors should do!
Conclusion
So, there you have it. A brief overview of what I did, why I chose to do it and how it all came together on my journey around the world. This is just one of many stories about people who’ve sailed around the world using only the sun, wind and tip of their Laser Sailboat.
