Introduction
When you’re having guests over, it’s important to make sure that your apartment is clean and presentable. Although this may be obvious, people often forget to take care of some simple things before their friends come over. The last thing you want is for your guests to see something embarrassing in your home — like dirty laundry or food debris on the floor! Here are ten things that should never be seen when you’re having guests over:
Your dirty laundry.
While it may seem like a no-brainer, you’d be surprised how many people have laundry hanging around their apartment. Not only is dirty laundry annoying to look at, but it can also be a source of embarrassment. I’m not saying your guest should see your dirty underwear (that’s just rude), but if one day you’re wearing an article of clothing that still has some stains on it from the last time you wore it—don’t expect your guests not to notice.
If there’s anything worse than having a pile of laundry lying around in plain sight for everyone to see, it would definitely be throwing said pile away without taking care of all the stains first! This is why I recommend that before setting out for the night, my roommate and I always make sure our clothes are clean and ready for wear by placing them into our hamper as soon as we get home from work/school/etc.. That way when we wake up in the morning there won’t be any surprises waiting for us while getting ready (unless they find someone else’s underwear). We also take this opportunity when doing so as well: any stain remover or stain stick will do wonders here because nothing looks worse than being caught unprepared with something like this on hand during socialization hours!
Clutter everywhere.
It’s not only cleanliness that can make a place feel like home, but also the feeling of being comfortable in your own space. If you’ve got a lot of stuff lying around, it’ll be obvious to guests when they walk through the door. Make sure your apartment is tidy and organized before anyone comes by, even if it means getting up an hour earlier than usual or rushing to finish cleaning as soon as guests arrive. You’ll thank yourself later when everyone has gone away happy and impressed by how great you’ve made their time together.
Disgusting carpet.
- Disgusting carpet.
If you have an allergy-prone guest, their visit will be ruined by the disgusting amount of dust and germs that are stuck in your carpet. You can try to pick up after yourself, but the chances are you’ll miss something or forget to wipe off a surface before guests arrive. The answer: get rid of the carpet completely! Carpet is a breeding ground for germs and allergens, it’s expensive to replace (especially if you don’t do it yourself), and it’s even more expensive when someone gets sick from touching it!
- Dirty dishes piled up in sink.
Even if your sink looks clean, there could be food particles left inside that make guests uncomfortable enough to not want to touch anything in your kitchen again (and who knows how many other people have felt this way?). Thankfully replacing sinks isn’t too difficult or expensive—but even then…
- No trash can anywhere within reach of guests’ hands.*
A dirty bathroom.
When you’re having guests over, make sure your bathroom is sparkling. If it isn’t, consider this a reminder to do what you can right away—and if there’s something major that needs to be done (like replacing the bathtub), schedule it as soon as possible.
- Clean the toilet seat: Pay special attention here; it’s not just a matter of keeping things clean but also making sure there aren’t any spots or stains on your toilet lid or seat.
- Clean the sink: Make sure all toothbrushes and other personal items are hidden away before anyone comes over—and if they’re visible, check that they look neat and tidy too!
- Clean the mirror: If there are any smudges or streaks, wipe them off with a damp cloth so that everything looks nice and clear in case anyone uses it during their stay with you!
Inadequate toilet paper and towels.
You might think that this one is obvious, but it’s not. Guests will use a lot more of your toilet paper and towels than you do, especially if they have kids. Make sure there are plenty of clean ones handy in a convenient place.
Dirty dishes in the sink.
When your guests come over and see you’ve left dishes in the sink, they’ll think you’re a messy person. This is especially true if the dishes are dirty. If you want to avoid this scenario, put away your dishware when they’re done with their meal.
If you set out nice plates and bowls for guests, but don’t clear them afterwards (or even worse, leave them dirty), it will make them feel like they have to help out with cleaning up after themselves—whether or not that’s actually true!
Cat litter box.
If you have a cat and want to keep your guests from seeing its litter box, here are some tips:
- Clean the litter box regularly. Cats are clean animals, so they will go elsewhere if their area is dirty.
- Keep the litter box in a private area of your home. Your guests probably don’t want to see where your cat goes when it’s feeling frisky, so keep it hidden away in a room like the bathroom or laundry room.
- Place multiple food and water dishes far apart from each other so that neither one comes near where you keep the litter box (and vice versa). This also keeps cats from using one as an alternative place to relieve themselves when there isn’t time for them to make it back over there with all those legs!
Garbage can with things falling out of it
- Clean the garbage can
- Clean it out regularly
- Put a lid on the garbage can
- Don’t forget to empty it!
Food debris on the floor.
You want your guests to see you as someone who takes pride in their home and cares about cleanliness. That’s why it’s important not to leave food debris on the floor. Even if you’ve already eaten, there are still crumbs that are left behind on plates and bowls that can be easily cleaned up before they accumulate dirt. Leaving such messes is not only unsightly but also unhygienic—you don’t want your guests getting into contact with all those germs!
It also shows that you’re lazy or incompetent at doing simple tasks like wiping up after yourself every once in awhile (if not more often). Your house should always look spotless, regardless if someone is coming over or not!
Mushy, moldy food in the fridge and pantry.
- Don’t store food without airtight containers.
- Keep your fridge at the right temperature, and don’t leave it open for too long.
- If you aren’t sure about how long something has been sitting around, throw it out.
Clean up your apartment before guests come over
The way your apartment looks will be the first thing guests notice when they walk in. So, it’s important to make sure that you’re not leaving behind a bunch of clutter or dog hair on the floor. Look around and see what areas of your place could use some cleaning up before someone comes over. If you have extra stuff lying around, get rid of it!
It also helps to keep things neat and tidy in the bathroom and kitchen as well. Guests are going to use these areas too—including yourself—so keeping them clean is essential! Also, don’t forget about tidying up your closets! The more organized everything looks, the better impression you’ll make on whomever enters through those doors.
Conclusion
Just remember: if you want to look like a good host, keep your place clean and tidy. If you can’t be bothered to do that, at least try to hide the evidence of your laziness from your guests.
